Holly Days and Winter Assembly
Continuing an annual tradition, Student Council has been working to plan Holly Days this week and the winter assembly for this Friday.
“We wanted to change up some of the dress up days,” Student Council secretary Amanda Garcia said. “We had been doing a lot of the same days over the years, so we thought it would be good to mix it up.”
Aiming to integrate new dress up days this year, Student Council created “groutfit” Monday for students to wear all gray and having a class day on Wednesday where the classes wear different outfits relating to a winter theme.
“Ugly sweaters and red and green are traditions here at Maine West, so we did want to keep those themes,” Student Council vice president Olivia Perkins said.
Planning for the winter assembly, held after seven period this Friday, is in full swing. While the specific games and entertainment are kept under wraps, StuCo is going to maintain some favorite elements of past assemblies and add some fresh entertainment, too.
“We are trying to incorporate previous activities that people really enjoyed as well as bring in new games and activities that we have not done yet,” Garcia said.
Other plans for the season include taking pictures with Santa in the cafeteria on Dec.14, which is a Maine West tradition. Student Council will also be selling Blizzards from Dairy Queen in the cafeteria on Thursday, and they are teaming up with the Principal’s Leadership Team to spread holiday cheer. They hope to bring exciting new ideas and activities to Holly Days, while still keeping traditions.
Student Council hopes to add to the plentiful holiday spirit at Maine West. Besides Holly Days and the winter assembly, which are planned by Student Council, some hallways are decorated by departments to help students feel festive.
“I love how festive Maine West is during the holiday season,” Perkins said. “It really makes the last few days before finals and winter break more fun.”
