Maine West Fencing Team Starts the Season Strong

Ranking in the top third against 15 schools in their respective weapons, the Maine West fencing team had their first meet on Nov. 10 at Stevenson High School.
The Warriors competed against fencers from New Trier, Deerfield, U of C Lab School and several more. : It was just about getting in the mindset of competing. We reached our goal of starting strong,” senior saber captain Leo Galindo-Frias said. The team had two honorable mentions with senior Sobin Puthenthara meeting his goal of top 16 out of 64 for saber and senior épée captain Costa Nikols ranking fifth.
“The team prepared by doing drills and overall kick-starting their fitness routine,” Galindo-Frias said. “We also fenced against each other in order to get into the mentality of fencing. It definitely paid off.” The team practiced for hours every day after school in preparation for this meet.
Their second individual meet was at Marian Catholic Memorial in Wisconsin on Nov. 17 where the junior varsity fencers competed for the first time.
