MW Girls Track and Field Conference
Coming in at third place at the conference meet last Thursday, the Maine West girls varsity track team worked hard to beat their past records.
One year ago, the Maine West girls track team was proud of their sixth place ranking, but after hours of practice and dedication they totaled up their points to end this year’s indoor season with a third place ranking. Last Thursday, the team advanced in all categories including the 50 meter dash with sophomore Stacey Connor beating her in-season record of 7.80 seconds with 7.65 seconds.
As the team moves on to the outdoor season, they will take this victory with them but continue to pursue for more points. While the Maine West Girls Track and Field Team have increased their placement in comparison to last year, they still have a 37 point leap to get to second place. Sandra Stasiak, one of the senior captions on the team, explained, “I think it’s important that we work hard during practice because our results in races and field events reflect our effort.” She hopes that with this mentality the team will shine during the outdoor season starting March 27 at home vs. Elmwood Park.
With the indoor season being preparation for the 11 meets the team will face during the outdoor season, it is clear that this conference was an indication of the success to come. “Every year [the outdoor season] flies by. It makes me sad because at the end of the season, I would help prepare for senior night but now I’m one of the seniors,” Stasiak said. Stasiak’s 1600 meter time improved to 6:04.77. As one of the captains, she will do her best to uplift the team and help them beat even more records, including their indoor season times.
